News: A Mean, Green Colour Scheme For AP’s New Royal Oak Concept Watch
The latest in Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak Concept line, which launched back in 2002 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Gerald Genta’s beloved ‘baby’, is another of its ultramodern flying tourbillon pieces, the most famous of which is its Black Panther model of 2021.
Coming in a mix of materials including a 44mm sandblasted titanium case and push-piece guards, a green satin-brushed ceramic bezel and matching integrated rubber strap, this makes for one interesting Royal Oak off-shoot indeed. With its tastefully muted colour scheme, it’s also a lot less ‘look-at-me’ than the controversial Black Panther.
That’s just the start of the intrigue around this mega-watch, though. The skeletonised dial is the heart and soul of this piece and it’s what will really get watch aficionados’ pulses racing.
With just a glance of the dial, you can admire the movement's flying tourbillon cage, blackened hour-glass-shaped upper bridge, crown ‘mode’ (indicated at 6 o’clock) and a GMT display at 3 o’clock with a two-tone disc to let you know whether it’s day or night in the second time zone. It also flaunts transferred white hour-markers on the black inner chapter ring and contrasting rose gold Royal Oak hands with a luminescent coating.
Inside this AP is the manual-wind Audemars Piguet calibre 2954. This in-house movement, visible through the exhibition case back, features 24 jewels, 21,600 vph and a whopping power reserve of 10 days. A visual treat, it boasts asymmetrical blackened titanium bridges with appealing rose-gold-toned accents and green CVD-coloured inserts.
What’s more, this Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT comes with an additional black rubber strap, so you can switch up your style as and when you please. 2014’s Tourbillon Concept offering was christened the ‘Stormtrooper’ due to its white and pale grey colour combination. We can’t wait to see what name people attempt to lumber this one with.
